The cable is the same type of cable traditionally used as telephone cable but of a better quality.

 While telephone cable need only be Category 3, network cable requires a higher bandwidth to carry Ethernet data signals at 100Mbps and greater. The Category 5 specification is defined as  EIA/TIA-568-A and specifies that the cable can perform up to 100Mhz. Like telephone cable, this type of Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable has 8 pairs of wires, with each pair having a number of twists. This Category 5 cabling is the most common in modern Ethernet networks such as 100Base-T and 1000Base-T and can either be solid copper or stranded copper. The latter is more common due to its flexibility and ability to cope with more bending and flexing.

Unshielded Twister Pair Cables are sold commercially in reels or commonly cut to specific lengths and available in a variety of colours to enable colour coding in the network. They will have RJ-45 network connectors attached at either end for simple connectivity with network devices such as Hubs, Switches and Routers.
