A print server is designed to allow network computers to access network printers instead of having to move files to a specific computer that has a printer attached, or to have a dedicated printer attached to each workstation on the network. Each computer on the network will normally have the ability do designate a default printer, but thisdefault setting can be overridden by the user if another is preferred. 

A dedicated print server can be configured with user permissions, so that only authorized users can access print services. Having multiple printers associated with print servers will ensure there is almost always a printer available to any member of the network who is authorized to use it, while potentially cutting down the size of the print queues and therefore providing a faster printing service.
